Lame Duk Kup Kite Fly Event

TCMG ANNUAL HIGH FLYER CONTEST
by Donna Mathison

A jolly group of TC'ers gathered on Santa Monica Beach on Sunday, January 47th (aka Feb. 16th) for the annual kite flying contest. While the rest of the country suffered with severe winter cold, snow, and ice, we lucky Southern Californians were frolicking on the beach flying kites. True, the day was a bit cool and overcast with rain showers threatening, but they never materialized. There was a nice breeze to lift the kites far into the sky. In fact, Harvey's runaway kite may have set the all-time high altitude record. It was seen floating far above Santa Monica when we all left for the day.

This year's winner with the highest flying kite (brought safely back to earth) was Bob Goldstein. He is now the proud keeper of the splendid Lame Duck Award, which will remain in his possession until the next high flyer claims the prize. Keep it polished, Bob.

Others enjoying this annual event were:
 Joe Douglass driving his TC
Paul and Kathy Gulsrud driving their TC
Thank you three for making this a TC event!
Anna Belle Goldstein Bob's flying coach. Obviously, she did a great job!
David Mathison driving his Lotus Elite (along with Donna, Tamara, and Michael both kids are now teens and several inches taller than Donna. They didn't all come in the Elite!)
Dave and Joyce Edgar who came riding in like cowboys on shiny motorcycles and braving the chance of a wet ride home in the threatening rain
Harvey Schnaer with friend Beverly Ann (Harvey's TC is still in the shop or he would have driven it!)
Tony and Cindy Henkels charming as ever, even without their TC
And the wonderful hosts and organizers of the Kite Fly Bob and Charlotte Wilmer

To complete the day, most of the group continued the fun with dinner at their favorite English pub in Santa Monica YE OLDE KINGSHEAD where Bob distributed prizes and many laughs were shared.

We missed all the rest of you, but keep your eyes skyward looking for Harvey's kite..

Harvey says: "Oooh - I'm almost has high as that 747 now."

Donna winds the string in
while her daughter Tamera untangles.
Judge Bob looks to see how high their kite is.

Paul and Kathy Gulsrud watching their kite soar high above the TCs.

Paul was at the end of his line.

Paul and Kathy drove over in their
very sharp looking TC. It was great to see new faces and TCs out.

Now here is a motometer that
Sharon would like.

Can't be a Guild event unless we peek
under at least one bonnet.

Better make it two for good measure.

David Mathison brought out his very
nice Lotus Elite since his TC was
having chrome work being done.

Bob has to really concentrate as his kite was so far out you could hardly see it.  He needed binoculars.

Annabel may not have had the highest kite but she sure was enjoying the day.  Bob stands on her shoulders.

Joyce and David didn't bring their stunt kites this year. No room on the motorcycles they drove up on.

David Mathison assists Charlotte in launching her kite.

David tells the kite to behave itself
as it flops in the wind.

David and Tony marvel at Bob's determination to win the Duk Kup.

Cindy shows off her prize winning "Best Decorated Kite"

And the winner of the highest flying kite was Bob Goldstein.  He not only had the most string out but actually wound it all back in too.
