Fathers' Day Car Show

Turns out that a lot of our boating
buddies are car nuts too. We found this out at the 1st Annual
Father's Day Car Show at the Ventura Yacht Club. Thinking
that they might be short of entries for this maiden event, the
organizers asked if both Norma and I could show our respective
MGs. We were happy to comply, and besides, it would be the first
time both cars would be mobile and detailed at the same time.
To insure a good
turnout, the Club bar-B-qued some ribs and a nice roast beef,
and for extra insurance, they added a Chili Cookoff which drew
eighteen mouth-searing entries.
To everyone's
surprise, we also had 21 entries ranging from "interesting"
to "to die for." There was only one prize, a Members'
Favorite, which was won by a freshly assembled, 1940 Ford Pickup
with a stock, flathead V8 in plain-jane factory condition. Very
rare indeed. In fact, I might have voted for it had it not been
for that pretty, little, yellow, MG TC.
In the lineup
were three, count'em, three Austin Bantams: a saloon, a convertible,
and of all things a Bantam-powered midget racer. Also of interest
was a '56 Morgan driver, and a Jaguar XKE and a '54 Corvette,
both in concours trim.

The "old
timer" award, had there been one, would have gone to a very
respectable 20s Rolls Royce which gave rides around the area
for a $15 donation toward the Club's new elevator. (We're all
getting older, you know?)
A dozen or so
other worthy examples of German and U.S. manufacture rounded
out a very successful exhibit with plans for another show in
'07 with a couple dozen additional members who "wished that
they had participated." Who knows? This modest little members'
"show-and tell" might just grow into a true concours-d'elegance
in the not too distant future. **
