March 11: Andres Pico Adobe Tour

On Sunday, March 11 we visit Andres Pico Adobe, named for Pio Pico (Pico Blvd) built in 1834 and one of the oldest adobe structures in Los Angeles. For those who come hungry, we start our day with lunch at a nearby restaurant before caravanning to the Adobe. Once there, we’ll enjoy a private guided tour of the various structures on the grounds.

In addition to the adobe, we will see an original 1904 redwood structure from Isaac Lankershim’s (Lankershim Blvd) ranch, which used to cover half of the San Fernando Valley. Some of the original furnishings from the Lankershim Ranch offices are displayed, including an ornately-carved desk and a scale used to weigh the output from the Lankershim gold mine in California.

We will also explore a 1914 Southern Pacific Railroad flagman’s shanty which was used at the intersection of Maclay Street and the tracks in San Fernando until 1948. Today it showcases railroad memorabilia.

Meet at 11:30 AM for lunch at Bear Pit BBQ in Mission Hills, in business since the 1940’s.  The restaurant opens at 11:30 and is located at 10825 Sepulveda Blvd, Mission Hills, CA 91345. We depart for the Adobe, which is located just down the street, at 12:45 for our 1PM tour.

May 22: General Meeting

“All Things New”

After the hugely successful premiere of this program last year, we have decided to bring it back around for another go in 2018.  Members are encouraged to bring stories, items for show and tell or anything “new”.  This can include projects on your TC or other items of interest but they do not have to be car-related.  Vacation stories, birthdays or your fancy new hat would also suffice!  See what your fellow club members are up to with their TCs, and lives in general.  This is a great chance to learn something new and catch up with old friends!

Our participants so far include:

  • Curt Sorensen on his TC restoration
  • Steve Simmons on “various gizmos of historical interest”

Sign up by contacting Curt Sorensen to let him know you would like to participate!  Watch for a flyer in the mail with further details.  Contact Steve Simmons or Curt Sorensen with any questions or special needs.

May 30 – June 1: Julian Double Day

Take a trip to the quaint mountain town of Julian, California, located in the beautiful Cuyamaca mountains of Northeastern San Diego County. Founded during the gold rush of the 1870’s, Julian has retained much of its old west charm and will be our home for two nights of TCs and camaraderie. See where gold was discovered, sample Julian’s famous apple pie, shop stores housed in historic buildings dating back to the 1870’s, hike and picnic amid oaks and pines, sample Julian’s famous apple pie, or ride down Main Street in a horse-drawn carriage. And did we mention the apple pie?

We arrive on Wednesday afternoon and settle in for an “on your own” evening of dinner and shopping. Thursday’s activities will include a scenic drive to Pine Valley (and other locations) for lunch, and a group dinner in Julian. Friday will feature a TC lineup and group photo before departing for home.  Don’t miss this special event, so book your room today!  (and have some pie)

Hotel reservations must be made by April 30 to guarantee a room.  For hotel reservation info, schedule of activities, etc, see the April newsletter or the flyer which will be showing up in your mailbox when we get closer to the event. This video comedy was made during the 18th Annual San Diego Double Day event in 1989 and was shot by Gayne and Doug Wimer with help from several other TCMG members. See the exploits of Belland, Bundy, Chalmers, Coleman, Crandall, Lutz, Roth, Schnaer, Simon, Wilmer and Wimer as they compete to win in this totally oddball production recently re-discovered and digitized by Allan Chalmers.
