TC Motoring Guild loses two members

Ed Pohle: Allan Chalmers has just informed us that Ed Pohle recently passed. He and Karen (who passed in 2019) were members for over 22 years and members of ARR for much longer. They lived in Squaw Valley for a number of years and then moved to Auburn just a few years ago. His TC was one of the best – he won first in class twice at Pebble Beach in 1966 and 1967. Ed and Karen will both be missed.

Mark Acosta: The Acostas are recent members but have made a big impression on our group. Mark’s outgoing and friendly attitude along with his enthusiasm for old cars made him a perfect fit within our band of TC lovers. His passing was sudden and too soon, but we are grateful to have known him for the time he was with us. Our thoughts and prayers are with Deb and the rest of Mark’s family. Services will be held on March 25th in Fresno, CA.

TC Motoring Guild loses its earliest member, Joe Douglass

It’s with a heavy heart that we bring you the news of Joe Douglass’ passing at the age of 103. Most of us knew Joe personally, or at least heard about him from others. He purchased his 1949 MG TC brand new from the showroom floor and it still sits in his garage, complete with its original albeit weathered Clipper Blue paint. Joe came to our group in 1959 and was a tremendous personality within TC Motoring Guild, having served as President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer and Director, plus Membership and Events Chairs. He led countless tours, most famously our annual wildflower tour in Antelope Valley. He loved TCs and freely shared his wisdom on their mechanical peculiarities with anyone who would listen.

Joe loved his vintage motorcycles as well, and in addition to the TC he also drove an MGB GT and a VW bug. His charm and wit were things of legend, and his kindness was infectious. He loved the outdoors, which is something that seems to go hand in hand with the MG TC. The world needs more Joe Douglass’, and we will miss him dearly.

meetings

Our next monthly meeting will be held on April 25 on Zoom.  The evening’s program will be a collection of photos and stories from our members called “Things I wish the previous owner hadn’t done”.  If you have a stories to share, send them to Mike Simmons.

The meeting starts at 6:00 PM (Pacific). Members may join 15 minutes early.

Note that anyone making a simulated journey to the meeting in a TC by driving a minimum of 10 miles on the day of the meeting will receive a point toward the Sargent Award.

March recap: 23 members attended our February meeting on Zoom. Four TCs were driven a simulated journey of at least ten miles by Edgar, Lemieux, Loe and Steve Simmons. Thanks to Charley Williams for his presentation on his documentary about the Shasta Ski area.  You can now view the video here.

Monthly Events

The Wildflower Tour returns for 2023!  Recent storms have brought wildflowers back to California in abundance.  Many types of wildflowers including poppies are blooming in the mountains and deserts north of Los Angeles.  On Saturday, April 15, our adventure will take us on a 1-hour drive along scenic roads to the California Poppy Reserves in Lancaster.

After touring the sprawling fields of flowers, we will visit the nearby home of Michael and Wanda Hughes to see their TC restoration in progress.  Following the garage tour will be a picnic at the Hughes home.

February Recap: 17 members and guests driving 8 TCs (and one MGA) took part in our Lame Duk Kup event. Congratulations to the Edgar team for winning the Duck this year!

Monthly DIY Tours

The April DIY Tour has started!  Choose one, or both of the following themes:

April Fools: Make up a tall tale, and get a photograph (that includes your TC) to back up the story.  Like that fallen tree which was of course cut down by George Washington’s axe.

Easter Bunny: Photograph your TC with something to do with Easter, Rabbits or Eggs.

There will be no mileage requirement for this month’s challenge!  Send your photo(s) to Joyce Edgar by April 22nd to receive a Sargent award point and to have your photos included in the March 25th Zoom meeting.

Have fun!
