David McCanne Passes

We have just learned that TCMG member David McCanne passed on September 30.  A private service was held in October.  He and Lucy joined the group in 1993 and were active members until recently, still driving the TC that David bought in 1959.

The McCannes and their TC were regularly seen at TCMG activities including meetings, driving events and our annual Conclave with the Abingdon Rough Riders, as well as various GoF West events.  He also had a love of trains, which he shared with us in the form of his amazing models at a meeting years ago.  Our thoughts are with Lucy and the rest of their family.

Dues Are Due

Remember to send in your 2023 membership dues! If you’re attending the holiday party, you can send your dues and meal payments together.  Meal payments must be made by November 20, and dues are due by the holiday party on December 4th.  If you need instructions, see the Membership Renewal page.

meetings

The 2022 TCMG Holiday Party will take place on Sunday, December 4. This year’s party will be a BBQ-style luncheon held at the home of Steve & Linda Simmons. Join us and enjoy the following entertainment and activities:

  • Awards ceremonies for our three prestigious trophies:
    • Earl Sargent Memorial “Use it or lose it” Trophy
    • Frank Mason Award
    • Breakdown Award
  • Announcement of the 2023 TC Motoring Guild Executive Council.
  • Our annual tradition, auctioning of “The Brick”. This is a piece of the original Abingdon factory where our TCs were built. The wining bid takes the brick home for one year.
  • Raffle where you can win fabulous prizes! Advance tickets sales available for Zoom attendees. In-person attendees may purchase in advance or at the party.  Those who drive a TC to the meeting will get one free raffle ticket with their ticket purchase.
  • Touring the Simmons’ collection of vintage cars.
  • 50/50 drawing where you can win a pile of money! Bring cash to purchase 50/50 tickets.
  • Special screening of a fully restored, high definition film showing the very first TCMG / ARR Conclave from 1957.
  • Fundraiser and Toy Drive to benefit Foster Children’s Resource Center.  The center provides emergency clothing and necessities to foster children referred by the Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS). It gives each child new school clothing, a jacket, pajamas, socks, underwear, personal care items, a backpack, school supplies, a book, and a toy. Each child is given personal attention and treated with dignity and respect, helping them to feel special.  Bring a new, unwrapped toy or contact Joyce Edgar to make a cash donation. Toys needed most this year are for ages 4-8.

Parts of this meeting will be simulcast on Zoom.

November recap: 15 members and one guest attended our November meeting on Zoom. 6 TCs made a simulated journey to the meeting by driving 10 miles or more.  TCs were driven by Edgar, Hunsberger, Lemieux, S Simmons, M Simmons and Taylor.  Thanks to Curt Sorensen for his presentation on LED D-Lamp conversions.

One of TCMG’s Earliest Members, Ron Simon, Has Passed

With great sadness, we learned this morning that Ron Simon has passed. Ron was one of our earliest members, having first joined TC Motoring Guild in 1956. He served several times as president including at our first Conclave in 1957, and was a member of the TCMG Executive Council for 25 consecutive years.  As a die-hard TC enthusiast his technical knowledge benefited TC owners across the globe, and his stories of racing his TC in the 50’s and 60’s were always enjoyable. A video of Ron at the 60th annual Conclave can be seen by clicking here. Watch for more stories and photos of Ron and his cars in upcoming newsletters.

21 members were present at Ron’s service with three TCs, including the TC that Ron restored and drove for decades with Bobbie at his side.  The cars were placed on display with Ron’s positioned prominently up front at the outdoor service, allowing him to pass by it one last time.

meetings

Come prepared for a Halloween Themed TCMG TRIVIA quiz. Study the website, especially newer members. This can be fun; it can be spooky; it can be weird. But mostly it will be FUN and you may learn some things about your club and club members. This meeting will also include nominations for 2023 TCMG Executive Council.

September recap: 31 members plus one guest attended our September meeting (26 in person and 6 via Zoom).  Six TCs were present at the in-person meeting driven by S Simmons, M Simmons, Hunsberger, Sorensen, Zucca and Lemieux. Three additional TCs made a simulated drive of 10 miles or more, driven by Edgar, and Zoom attendees Prowell and Taylor. Thanks to Steve & Linda Simmons for hosting this meeting at their home, and Mike Simmons for his interesting talk on the history of TC 6110.

Don Mclish Passes

With heavy hearts we report the passing of Don McLish. He and his wife Jan, who we lost in 2016, were long time members of TCMG. Since they joined in 1970, Don served two terms as President as well as club historian and several other positions within the club council.

Don’s love of TCs began in November 1965 at a gas station in Duluth, Minnesota with the temperature near zero F and snow on the ground. By February, the temperature now at minus 26, he purchased his car.

He wrote, “The price only $595. It had been more expensive, but let’s just say that the demand for classic MG roadsters in Duluth, Minnesota in February, being 26 below zero, was not exactly in your hot demand of wild succulent anticipation.” His passion for these cars would continue, taking him and Jan on many adventures over the next several decades. We will miss them both.

You can read more of Don’s TC adventures on his member page.

meetings

NOTE DATE CHANGE! Also note this is an RSVP event.  See flyer (in the mail) or group email for RSVP info.

Please join us on Sunday, September 25 for an evening of TCs and Ice Cream at the home of Steve and Linda Simmons.  Our program for the evening will be a presentation detailing the history and recent resurrection of TC6110, the former Barney Jackson TC, now owned by TCMG member Mike Simmons.  Hear the history of this TC, how Barney came to enjoy it for 73 years, and what it took to return the car to the road after sitting dormant for decades. Also learn about the numerous modifications performed by its previous and current owners to make a better “TC driver”. The car will be on display at the meeting.

Tables will be set up, and members are welcome to bring a picnic dinner to enjoy in the garden before the meeting. After the business portion of the meeting, enjoy an old-fashioned Ice Cream Social, followed by our featured presentation. Private tables for social distancing are available with advance request.

All participants (including those on Zoom) will be entered in a raffle.  Those arriving in TCs or other 60’s and earlier classics will have two chances to win! Watch for a flyer in the mail in early September with further details.

Distant members please note that this meeting will be simulcast on Zoom!  An email will be sent in September with details for those watching remotely.

August recap: 24 members attended our August meeting, with six TCs being driven a simulated 10 miles or more.  TCs were driven by S. Simmons, Hunsberger, Edgar, Lemieux, M. Simmons and Loe.  Our thanks to Allan Chalmers for a fun presentation on his journey through 1965 Europe in a Fiat!

Conclave is coming!

Our annual conclave with the Rough Riders will be held October 8-10 in Cambria. One of Sunday’s activities is a tour of Hearst Castle.  Those planning to participate may book their tours starting on September 1st.  Several tours are available so you can choose which one you would like to take.  The conclave organizers suggest booking your tour at around 11AM so that all participants can start and finish at approximately the same time.

If you haven’t booked your room yet, please do so as soon as possible.  A list of activities for the weekend plus other information can be found on the Calendar Page.

The accompanying photo shows 20 of our members and several of the cars.  Awards were won by our members in several categories as listed below. TCMG also won the coveted Monterey Cup, making this one of the rare years VMG has been dethroned in this award. Congratulations to all!

Special congratulations go out to David & Joyce Edgar for winning the Al Moss High Point Award, the crowning jewel of GOF West trophies!  Joyce has also accepted the position of chairman for the GoF West Steering Committee.  We have no doubt that she will do a great job, as she does on our own executive council.

Stan Belland Passes

It is with a sad heart that we report the passing of Stan Belland. Stan was a significant contributor to the TC Motoring Guild. He was brought into the club by the other two Cambria Geezers, Bob McKarney and Clarence Weiss in the late 1970’s. The other two pre-deceased him, but Stan claimed that the twenty years the three of them ran around Cambria in their TC’s were some of the richest and most enjoyable years of his life.

Stan took some teasing about the time it took to get his TC operational, but he dove into the TCMG spirit with a vengeance. He was the club president for 4 years, vice-president for 7 years and handled programs for 5. He was a significant part of the Classic Chassis newsletter production for 8 years and was the recipient of our most coveted Frank Mason Award six times. He leaves his wife Esther, three children, five grandchildren and one great grand. He will be missed.

New Monthly Bonus Events Announced

In addition to our regular driving events, each month this year will have a bonus “do it yourself” tour. These tours will be in the spirit of our main events, keeping with the theme of each month’s activity. Bonus tours will be announced in the first half of each month, so be sure to keep an eye on the club calendar for updates!

Each bonus tour will also count for one point toward the Sargent Award, but will not be required activities to win an Iron Bottom Award. We hope you participate!

meetings

Join us on August 23 for our Zoom meting, featuring a presentation by TCMG member member Allan Chalmers. Allan will give a presentation on the six months he spend in Europe in 1965, with a heavy emphasis on car content.

The meeting starts at 6:00 PM (Pacific).  Members may join 15 minutes early.

Note that anyone making a simulated journey to the meeting in a TC by driving a minimum of 10 miles on the day of the meeting will receive a point toward the Sargent Award.

July recap: 18 members attended our July meeting, with six TCs being driven a simulated 10 miles or more.  TCs were driven by S. Simmons, Hunsberger, Edgar, Lemieux, M. Simmons and Schirripa.  Our thanks to Rub Zucca for his presentation on Civil War history and artifacts.

We hope you participate!

meetings

Join us on July 26 for our Zoom meting, featuring a fascinating presentation by TCMG member Rob Zucca.  Rob will be showing parts of his extensive collection of Civil War era artifacts and memorabilia including uniforms, firearms and much, much more.  You won’t want to miss this one!

The meeting starts at 6:00 PM (Pacific).  Members may join 15 minutes early.

Note that anyone making a simulated journey to the meeting in a TC by driving a minimum of 10 miles on the day of the meeting will receive a point toward the Sargent Award.

June recap: 26 members attended our June meeting, the annual Henkels Summer Picnic.  Seven TCs graced the driveway, driven by S. Simmons, Edgar, Hunsberger, Lemieux, Loe, Ramos and Spiegel. Very special thanks to Cindy Henkels for hosting the club yet another year.

Monthly DIY Bonus Events

To celebrate our country’s Independence Day, the theme of our DIY tour for July will be “All-American”.  Your task is to photograph your TC (with or without you in it) with something that feels “all American” to you.  Whether it’s historic or or contemporary, a patriotic symbol or something that says independence, the sky is the limit.  Use your imagination and have fun!

To qualify for Sargent Award Points, you must drive your TC at least five miles during your photo journey. Send your photos to Joyce Edgar by July 21st for inclusion in our next online meeting.

Being the 50th GoF West, and held among the country’s finest vineyards, your challenge is to photograph your TC with something related to “wine” or “50”. As always, creativity is encouraged. For example, misspellings happen.

To qualify for Sargent Award Points, you must drive your TC at least five miles during your photo journey. Send your photos to Joyce Edgar by June 25th for inclusion in our next online meeting.

Monthly Driving Events

On Saturday, May 28th, we will be heading north to the beautiful Heritage Valley for a day of gorgeous scenery, great driving roads and interesting destinations. We begin with a 30-mile scenic drive along smaller farm and country roads to our first stop, a real honey farm.  Here you can sample various honey products fresh from the farm and see how they are made. Products are all available for purchase in the farm store.

Our second stop is at the largest rose farm and nursery in the area for a tour of their spectacular walking gardens.  Then, a picnic lunch among the flowers.  Pack a picnic chair just in case we run out of seating.  This will be an afternoon in the country you won’t want to miss!

Watch for a flyer in the mail, as well as info in the upcoming newsletter.

April Recap: 10 members with 5 TCs and one modern participated in our April event. TCs were driven by Simmons, Edgar, Loe, Hunsberger and Zucca.

Monthly Bonus Events

In keeping with the theme of our upcoming May driving event, the bonus event this month will feature Bees. Your task is to photograph your TC with something relating to bees. We’re looking for creativity more than literally finding bees. The bigger stretch of the imagination of how your photo relates to “bees”, the better! Note the quotes around the word. Think outside of the box here. Your photo doesn’t have to have anything to do with insects.

Also remember to drive at least five miles during your photo shoot to receive one point toward the Sargent Award!

Have fun, and submit your photos to Joyce Edgar by May 21st to have your photo included in the slide show at our meeting on the 24th.

Monthly Driving Events

NOTE: The previously scheduled Wildflower Tour has been cancelled due to a lack of blooms.

Our April driving event will take us into the Angeles National Forest for a “Picnic in the Pines”.  The route will feature scenic mountain roads and a visit to the first ranger station built in the forest, circa 1900.  Bring a picnic lunch and some chairs and dine among “TCs and Tall Trees”.

We will gather at the parking area adjacent to the La Canada Flintridge City Hall/Olberz Park (intersection of Civic Center Drive & Town Center Drive) at 10:00 AM. After a little tire kicking we will drive 25 miles up Angeles Crest Highway to our picnic site.  Seating is limited so bring chairs!

March Recap: 13 members and guests with three TCs participated in our March event. TCs were driven by Loe, Simmons and Edgar.

Monthly Bonus Events

Since our planned Wildflower Tour this month has been canceled due to a lack of blooms, our bonus event will become an opportunity to find those missing flora and photograph them with your TC.

To participate and earn points toward the TCMG Sargent Award, drive your TC at least five miles and photograph it with flowers, or something to do with flowers, by April 22. Show off the Spring wildflowers in your area, or for those in colder climates maybe you have a favorite florist or something else flower-related. Just get those TCs out on the road and get creative!

Send your photo(s) to Joyce Edgar by April 22 to receive your participation points and have your photos included in the meeting presentation on Tuesday, April 26.

For more meeting and event information, visit the Calendar Page.

2021 Award Winners

Our congratulations also go out to the winners of the various TCMG awards for 2021:

  • Frank Mason Award – Joyce Edgar
  • Earl Sargent memorial Trophy – Richard & Sandra Loe
  • Iron Bottom – Richard & Sandra Loe
  • Breakdown Award – Cliff Lemieux

Having completed the year with a perfect attendance of TCMG activities with their TC, Richard & Sandra Loe have been presented the Iron Bottom Award for 2021. This achievement makes the Loes 7-time recipients of this difficult to obtain award.  Congratulations!

To learn more about these awards, including the various ways the breakdown award has been won, see the History Section of the web site.

meetings

Our first meeting of the year will be held January 25 on Zoom.  Our program for the evening will feature our own members talking about their new year’s projects and what they hope to accomplish this year. Scheduled speakers a/o Jan. 15 include Daniel Harrison, Cliff Lemieux and Steve Simmons. If you would like to talk about your project, contact Joyce Edgar to sign up.

The meeting starts at 6:00 PM (Pacific).  Members may join 15 minutes early.

Note that anyone making a simulated journey to the meeting in a TC by driving a minimum of 10 miles on the day of the meeting will receive a point toward the Sargent Award.

December recap: 29 members and guests attended our first in-person meeting since the pandemic moved us to an online format. Two TCs were parked outside, driven by the Loes and Hunsberger.  Thanks to all who donated to the Children’s Fund.  TCMG donated a full TC worth of toys plus $1,500 cash!

For more meeting and event information, visit the Calendar Page.

Join us for the 2022 Lame Duk Rallye on January 43rd (February 12)! Test your powers of perception as you journey along roads less traveled. See the charming and rural areas of Old Topanga Canyon, Fernwood and Monte Nido while seeking answers to nefarious easy questions provided by your rally master. Answer wisely and win the coveted Lame Duk Trophy!

Please bring a pencil or pen so you can write down your answers as you travel the rallye route. A picnic lunch and awards ceremony will follow the rallye.  Watch for a flyer in the mail for details on starting time and location.

November Recap: Six members with four TCs braved the foggy morning weather to participate in the last driving event of the year, a tour and picnic in the Flintridge Foothills. TCs were driven by Loe, Simmons, Zucca and Hunsberger.

For more meeting and event information, visit the Calendar Page.

Remembering Leo Pedersen

One of our long time members Leo Pedersen has passed away, leaving a big hole in our group of intrepid TC enthusiasts.  Leo along with his wife Martha was a regular at our northern events including annual Conclaves and was loved by all who were fortunate enough to know him.  His humor and wit, not to mention willingness to share his vast knowledge and experience about MGs will be sorely missed.
