meetings

Our September meeting will be held on the 25th at our usual Studio City location.  The evening’s entertainment will include a once lost video entitled “Rally Round”.  This video comedy was made during the 18th Annual San Diego Double Day event in 1989 and was shot by Gayne and Doug Wimer with help from several other TCMG members. It depicts a “typical” navigational rally of the time and stars many long-time TCMG personalities, many who are still members today. See the exploits of Belland, Bundy, Chalmers, Coleman, Crandall, Lutz, Roth, Schnaer, Simon, Wilmer and Wimer as they compete to win in this totally oddball production recently re-discovered and digitized by Allan Chalmers.  Also included are lots of outtakes and behind the scenes footage that are just as entertaining as the video itself!

August Recap: 19 members and guests were present for our August meeting at the Simon museum.  Four TCs were present – Simmons, Edgar, Simon (Ron) and Simon (Dave). A huge thanks to all of the Simons for opening their museum, and to Dave for giving us a fun and fascinating celebrity history on the various cars in the collection.

On Sunday, July 15, spend a day surrounded by classic lines and good friends at one of the best British car shows in Southern California.  Bring your TC if you can, and don’t forget a picnic lunch and a blanket or chairs!  Run by the Central Coast British Car Club, the show is set in the cool ocean breeze at Channel Islands Park in Oxnard.  What better way is there to spend a Summer day?

Those who enter their TC in the show get to park in a shady area on the grass at the picnic location. Look for the TCMG banner over the line of TCs to find us. If entering a car in the show, pre-register by June 30 to save $10 on your entry fee, and get a free event shirt. The show also includes raffle drawings and trophies are awarded for all classes of cars. Food for purchase will be available on-site as well.

Meet at the TCMG banner for our picnic at 12:00 PM.  If you plan to enter your TC, let Steve Simmons know and we will save you a spot by our banner.  The show runs from 9AM – 2:30PM.  Click here for show details and entry form.

events

On Saturday, June 16, enjoy a country drive to the beautiful Santa Clara River Valley!  Our June event take us along scenic roads through canyons and farmlands to Santa Paula, the “Citrus Capitol of the World”.

Our destination is the California Oil Museum, housed in a restored 1800’s Victorian-era building which was the headquarters offices of the Union Oil Company.  Lunch will follow at a nearby restaurant in historic downtown Santa Paula.  Suggested donation is $4 per person for the tour.

Points of interest include:

  • A private guided tour of the original Union Oil Company headquarters, preserved as it was in the 1890’s, plus a re-created 1930’s apartment.
  • One of the largest vintage gas pump displays in California.
  • Exhibits detailing the history of the oil industry in our state.
  • A working turn-of-the-century cable tool rig.
  • Special exhibit: “When Dams Fail: Lessons Learned from St. Francis and Other Notable Incidents”.  This exhibit tells the 90-year-old story of one of the worst engineering disasters in American history, and second worst loss of life in California’s history.
  • Special exhibit: A gallery showcasing the 16 victims of the tragedy from Santa Paula.

Watch for a flyer in the mail for more information.

May Recap: 18 members and guests and four TCs took part in our Julian Double Day.  TCs were driven by Loe, Simmons, Edgar and Thelander, with a fifth guest TC making an appearance.  See the upcoming newsletter for more details.

Take a trip to the quaint mountain town of Julian, California, located in the beautiful Cuyamaca mountains of Northeastern San Diego County. Founded during the gold rush of the 1870’s, Julian has retained much of its old west charm and will be our home for two nights of TCs and camaraderie. See where gold was discovered, sample Julian’s famous apple pie, shop stores housed in historic buildings dating back to the 1870’s, hike and picnic amid oaks and pines, sample Julian’s famous apple pie, or ride down Main Street in a horse-drawn carriage. And did we mention the apple pie?

We arrive on Wednesday afternoon and settle in for an “on your own” evening of dinner and shopping. Thursday’s activities will include a scenic drive to Borrego Springs for lunch, and a group dinner in Julian. Friday will feature a TC lineup and group photo before departing for home.  Don’t miss this special event, so book your room today!  (and have some pie)

Hotel reservations must be made by April 30 to guarantee a room.  For hotel reservation info, schedule of activities, etc, see the April newsletter or the flyer which will be showing up in your mailbox when we get closer to the event. For further information, contact Gorden Bundy, June Wennekamp, Richard Loe, or Sandra Loe

meetings

After the hugely successful premiere of our “All Things New” program last year, we have decided to bring it back around for another go in 2018.  Join us on May 22, where members are encouraged to bring stories, items for show and tell or anything “new”.  This can include projects on your TC or other items of interest but they do not have to be car-related.  Vacation stories, birthdays or your fancy new hat would also suffice!  See what your fellow club members are up to with their TCs, and lives in general.  This is a great chance to learn something new and catch up with old friends!

Our participants so far include:

  • Curt Sorensen on his TC restoration
  • Steve Simmons on “various gizmos of historical interest”

Sign up by contacting Curt Sorensen to let him know you would like to participate!  Watch for a flyer in the mail with further details.  Contact Steve Simmons or Curt Sorensen with any questions or special needs.

For those who come hungry, we start our day with lunch at a nearby restaurant before caravanning to the Adobe. Once there, we’ll enjoy a private guided tour of the various structures on the grounds.

In addition to the adobe, we will see an original 1904 redwood structure from Isaac Lankershim’s (Lankershim Blvd) ranch, which used to cover half of the San Fernando Valley. Some of the original furnishings from the Lankershim Ranch offices are displayed, including an ornately-carved desk and a scale used to weigh the output from the Lankershim gold mine in California.

We will also explore a 1914 Southern Pacific Railroad flagman’s shanty which was used at the intersection of Maclay Street and the tracks in San Fernando until 1948. Today it showcases railroad memorabilia.

Meet at 11:30 AM for lunch at Bear Pit BBQ in Mission Hills, in business since the 1940’s.  The restaurant opens at 11:30 and is located at 10825 Sepulveda Blvd, Mission Hills, CA 91345. We depart for the Adobe, which is located just down the street, at 12:45 for our 1PM tour.

February Recap: Our first outing of the year, the 2018 Lame Duk Kup, saw two TCs make a showing driven by Loe and Simmons.  A ferocious battle was waged between the various teams with top honors going the the Simmons, who took home the coveted brass duck trophy.  See the upcoming newsletter for more details.

One Of Our Own Remembered
Bob & Annabel Goldstein

Annabel and Bob Goldstein

We were just informed of the passing of Annabel Goldstein.  She had been in fragile health for some time and passed on February 18th.  Annabel and her late husband Bob, who we lost in 2012, were very active members of TCMG for many years.

Services are being held at the same location as Bob’s:

2018 Conclave Dates Announced

Our annual conclave with Abingdon Rough Riders will take place October 12-14 at Narrow Gauge Inn in Fish Camp, near Yosemite. Further information on activities and hotel rates will be announced here when they are available.

meetings

Our next meeting will be held on February 27 in Studio City. The evening’s guest speaker will be TCMG member Mel Appell, who along with his wife Toni will be giving a special multimedia presentation about their power cruising adventures across the ocean.

You won’t want to miss these thrilling highlights…

  • See exiting destinations including Alaska and the Gallapegos Islands!
  • Watch Mel squeeze himself into areas of the boat smaller than his waistline!
  • Learn what it takes to endure these adventures, and why it’s a bad idea to leave unprepared!

January Recap: 24 members plus one guest were present for our January meeting.  Special thanks to Gene Olson for hosting another great game night.  The women’s team, still reeling from last years’s upset, took back their crown by once again defeating the men.

meetings

NOTE DATE CHANGE!  Our November meeting will be held on the 14th at our usual meeting spot in Studio City.  Our program for the evening will feature an M.G.-related movie, to be announced later.

October Recap: Two TCs graced the parking lot, driven by Simmons and Loe, for our annual Halloween party.  14 members enjoyed our Halloween games competition.  There was an all-female lineup of semi-finalists, with Bobbie Simon winning the championship round and a fabulous prize.  Congrats Bobbie!

events

Join us on November 12 for a tour of Rancho Los Encinos, an adobe rancho built in 1849 on the site of an ancient Native American village. The rancho is located on the original El Camino Real route (now Ventura Blvd) in the city of Encino (spanish for “Oak”), which is named for the rancho. We will learn the rich history of the rancho and tour the various buildings constructed on the site in the mid to late 1800’s, plus the stone-lined pond, in the shape of a Spanish guitar built on a spring by the Garnier brothers in the early 1870’s. A driving tour will precede the event, circumnavigating the original border of the 4,460 acre property. Afterward we will gather for lunch at a restaurant adjacent to the pond.

October Recap: 28 members with 8 TCs (one a TA actually) took part in our October Conclave event in Morro Bay.
