Gene Roth Remembered

We are deeply saddened to report the passing of Gene Roth, a 37-year TCMG member and avid M.G. enthusiast.  He passed away on April 20 with his daughter by his side.  Most of our members either knew Gene personally or by way of email.  He was a wealth of information and gladly shared his knowledge with anyone who asked.  With only one arm, he restored his supercharged TC to show winning condition.  And win it did, perhaps more often than any other and most often after driving several hundred miles through the desert to get to a car show.  His kindness and enthusiasm was infectious to say the least.

Gene and his wife Deana were very active members in the club, and could be spotted each year at our annual Conclaves, GoF West and other M.G.-related events around the Western states.  In his TC, Gene could out-drive most people on a windy mountain road despite having only one arm to both steer and shift with.  His life was an interesting one, part of which can be read on pages 6-7 of the September 2018 TCMG newsletter.  More stories about Gene will be found in the next issue this Summer.

“In ‘82 Mike Goodman invited me to join the TC Motoring Guild . That was one of the best things that ever happened to me . We have met and made some of our best friends through our association with the TC Motoring Guild .” – Gene Roth

May Event Announced

Since the current virus situation prevents us from holding a traditional driving event, a do-it-yourself event has been announced for May.  See below for details.

Upcoming Activity Cancellations

Because the safety of our members is our primary concern, several of our planned upcoming activities have been cancelled due to concerns over the COVID-19 virus.

  • The Double Day event in early May has been cancelled.
  • Our general meeting on May 26 may be cancelled, depending on Covid-19 developments.  Check back for more information.
  • The Autry Museum is currently closed for an indefinite amount of time.  Therefore our planned tour of the museum on May 30 is cancelled.

Other upcoming activities may also be postponed or cancelled depending on what happens with the Covid-19 virus situation we’re experiencing.  Check this website for the latest updates and status of other upcoming TCMG activities.

events

Due to our current restrictions and in an effort to ease back into TCMG activities, this month (May) we will have a “Drive Your TC” event.  You simply drive your TC a minimum of 10 miles and take a photo of it at a local landmark (could be your trip to the PO or market).  Then submit that photo by May 17th to David Edgar for the next newsletter. The advantage to this unusual event is that any member anywhere can participate while following social distancing practices.

Since this is an official TCMG event, Sargent points will be awarded if you drive your TC. There is no rule about where those events have to be, or how they are to be run. So this is an opportunity for you to be creative, exercise your TC, and earn Sargent points no matter where you live.

For those that would like to participate, but cannot get out in your TC, send a photo showing us what you are up to.

March Recap: 17 members and guests took part in our March event to Lanterman House.  Three TCs were present, driven by Lemieux, Simmons and Loe.

Conclave Dates Announced

The 64th Annual TCMG / ARR Conclave will be held October 3-5 (Saturday through Monday), and will be hosted this year by ARR. The location is not yet announced.

meetings

Our next monthly meeting will be held on February 25 at our usual Studio City location.  The program for the evening will consist of a documentary on the evolution of the automobile.  See how technologies spanning 9,000 years led to what we have today, from the invention of the wheel to the Model T, to self driving vehicles.

January recap: 17 members and guests attended our January Meeting.  Three TCs were present, driven by Loe, Simmons and Lemieux.  Thanks to Gene Olson for putting on another fun game night, where despite the female team’s creative (and encouraged) cheating, the men managed to pull off a tie!

For more meeting and event information, visit the Calendar Page.

events

PLEASE NOTE THIS IS AN RSVP EVENT!  Send RSVP to Richard Loe.

We will meet at and tour the Lanterman House in La Canada Flintridge on Wednesday, March 4th. This craftsman home was designed by Arthur Haley in 1915 for Dr. Roy Lanterman and his wife Emily. The property stayed in the Lanterman family until the two bachelor sons, who had continued to live in the house, died in the 1980s. At that point the home was given to the City of La Canada Flintridge. Therefore, the original amenities, furniture and decor remain. Dr. Lanterman was interested in the latest technology and the home has many period examples that reflect this, for instance this is the first residence west of the Mississippi built of reinforced concrete. One Lanterman son was a State Assemblyman and the other was an inventor who designed custom components for high performance vehicles. Fee for the tour is $3 for seniors or students and $5 for adults.

After the tour we will caravan to the historic Fair Oaks Pharmacy and Soda Fountain in South Pasadena for lunch. A woman entrepreneur had the building constructed and started the business in 1915. The menu is diverse with extravagant fountain desserts.  See the March newsletter for further details, or contact events chair Richard Loe.

February Recap: 14 members and guests took part in our Lame Duk Kup event.  Four TCs were present, driven by Loe, Hunsberger, Simmons and Spindler. A fifth TC driven by Lemieux returned home due to a misfire. Congratulations to Cliff Lemieux for winning the Lame Duk trophy!

Iron Bottom Awarded for 2019

For more meeting and event information, visit the Calendar Page.

events

Start off the new year with a thrilling, no holds barred TC Motoring Guild miniature golf competition! The winner takes home our coveted Lame Duk Kup Trophy, to be treasured for one whole year. Lunch and awards will follow at a nearby Pub.

Meet on Saturday, January 39 (aka February 8) at Castle Park in Sherman Oaks at 9:00 AM, located on the west side of Sepulveda Blvd just north of the intersection of 101 and 405 freeways. Our competition begins shortly after we arrive. Price per person is $3.00 for one 18-hole round.

For more information see the January / February newsletter or contact Richard Loe.

October Recap: 34 people with seven TC/TAs and a smattering of other classics attended the 63rd Annual TCMG / ARR Conclave in Morro Bay.  For more information, see the 2019 Conclave Page.

TCMG Loses Two Cherished Members

We are saddened to report the passing of two members, Karen Pohle and Joe Marcotte.

Edwin & Karen Pohle

Edwin & Karen Pohle

As reported by Allan Chalmers, Karen had Parkinsons and had been getting progressively worse for a few years. Ed and Karen had moved from Squaw Valley to Auburn recently and Karen had to go into a care facility.  As part of our Northern contingent, Ed and Karen have been regulars at our annual Conclaves for many years as well as long-time active members of the Abingdon Rough Riders.

Joe & Pat Marcotte

Joe & Pat Marcotte

Also reported by Allan, Joe had gone into hospital the day after our annual meeting to do a fix on his knee replacement, and caught something that caused great breathing problems. He was on serious oxygen and finally the problem was too much for him. Also part of our Northern contingent, Joe and Pat have also regulars at our annual Conclaves for ages as well as long-time active members of the Abingdon Rough Riders.

Our deepest sympathy to the family and friends of both Karen and Joe.  They will be missed.

meetings

Our next meeting will be held on May 28 at our usual location in Studio City.  TCMG member Joel Shapiro will be giving a talk about the restoration of his Vintage M.G.s.

April recap: 21 members and guests attended our April meeting, with three TCs parked outside driven by Loe, Einhorn and Simmons.  Thanks to Pete Thelander for an entertaining presentation on his many cars and restorations.
