Dues Are Due

Remember to send in your 2023 membership dues! If you need instructions, see the Membership Renewal page or contact our Membership Chair, Joyce Edgar.

TC Motoring Guild loses two members

Ed Pohle: Allan Chalmers has just informed us that Ed Pohle recently passed. He and Karen (who passed in 2019) were members for over 22 years and members of ARR for much longer. They lived in Squaw Valley for a number of years and then moved to Auburn just a few years ago. His TC was one of the best – he won first in class twice at Pebble Beach in 1966 and 1967. Ed and Karen will both be missed.

Mark Acosta: The Acostas are recent members but have made a big impression on our group. Mark’s outgoing and friendly attitude along with his enthusiasm for old cars made him a perfect fit within our band of TC lovers. His passing was sudden and too soon, but we are grateful to have known him for the time he was with us. Our thoughts and prayers are with Deb and the rest of Mark’s family. Services will be held on March 25th in Fresno, CA.

TC Motoring Guild loses its earliest member, Joe Douglass

It’s with a heavy heart that we bring you the news of Joe Douglass’ passing at the age of 103. Most of us knew Joe personally, or at least heard about him from others. He purchased his 1949 MG TC brand new from the showroom floor and it still sits in his garage, complete with its original albeit weathered Clipper Blue paint. Joe came to our group in 1959 and was a tremendous personality within TC Motoring Guild, having served as President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer and Director, plus Membership and Events Chairs. He led countless tours, most famously our annual wildflower tour in Antelope Valley. He loved TCs and freely shared his wisdom on their mechanical peculiarities with anyone who would listen.

Joe loved his vintage motorcycles as well, and in addition to the TC he also drove an MGB GT and a VW bug. His charm and wit were things of legend, and his kindness was infectious. He loved the outdoors, which is something that seems to go hand in hand with the MG TC. The world needs more Joe Douglass’, and we will miss him dearly.

meetings

Our next monthly meeting will be held on March 28 on Zoom.  The evening’s program will be a documentary film by TCMG member Charley Williams on the construction of a ski lift in Northern California. Anyone interested in nuts and bolts should find the process fascinating!

The meeting starts at 6:00 PM (Pacific). Members may join 15 minutes early.

Note that anyone making a simulated journey to the meeting in a TC by driving a minimum of 10 miles on the day of the meeting will receive a point toward the Sargent Award.

February recap: 25 members and one guest attended our February meeting on Zoom. Three TCs were driven a simulated journey of at least ten miles by Edgar, Lemieux and Loe. Thanks to Pete and Fran Thelander for the presentation detailing their adventure returning a 1934 MG NE to the Ards TT in Ireland after 69 years!

events

Monthly Events

Note: This event is tentatively set for April 2nd, but may change as bloom predictions become more clear.

The wildflower tour returns for 2023! With the passing of our long time tour leader, this event is now the Joe Douglass Memorial Wildflower Tour.  We will visit some of Joe’s favorite spots in what is predicted to be a spectacular show of wildflowers in the Antelope Valley.

Following the tour as usual will be a picnic lunch at a nearby park. Stay tuned for further details.

February Recap: 17 members and guests driving 8 TCs (and one MGA) took part in our Lame Duk Kup event. Congratulations to the Edgar team for winning the Duck this year!

Monthly DIY Tours

The earliest known M.G. advertisement was reportedly seen on March 2, 1923 – exactly 100 years ago this month. To celebrate the 100th anniversary of the M.G. brand, our “Do It Yourself Tour” for the month of March will involve driving your TC on a journey to find or achieve something relating to 100. Take a photo with your TC showing what you found. Examples:

  • An object approximately 100 years old
  • The number 100 displayed somewhere
  • 100 of something (count carefully!)
  • A 100 mile drive (let’s see that trip meter say 100!)
  • Driving your TC 100 MPH (good luck with that)

To receive a point toward the 2023 Sargent Award, you must drive at least 10 miles during your journey to capture a photo. Submit your photo(s) to Joyce Edgar by March 25th.
