A remembrance from Allan Chalmers, submitted June, 2019.
The Conclave for 1959 – the third Annual- was in Carmel. In the good old days, folks didn’t think so much about driving 300+ miles. And we usually did it in Saturday, home Sunday!
It was a memorable event in many ways on my first conclave- there was hanky panky (we were young, remember?) – and a harrowing drive Saturday night.
Joe and Jeanne Douglass, Lucien Remy and fiancée Linda Bannister, in TCs and me in my 1955 MG Magnette (TC apart) set off, after the dinner Saturday, for the Nepenthe restaurant 30 miles south. It was dark, it was very foggy. I took Lucien’s dog Duchess – who usually sat on the tonneau cover.
It was a very, very fast drive. As I would corner, the dog would fly from one side of the car to the other. If you have driven Hwy 1 in that section, you know what I mean.
When we got there the fog was even thicker. Free spirits of the area were doing dances for our entertainment. Actor Anthony Quinn came in with a babe on each arm (he was shorter than them).
OK, we whistled back thru the same fog and the next day, Lucien counted 18 broken spokes.
Linda was heard to say ,”Don’t you EVER do that again!!”.
The marriage didn’t last.
