TC Motoring Guild loses its earliest member, Joe Douglass

It’s with a heavy heart that we bring you the news of Joe Douglass’ passing at the age of 103. Most of us knew Joe personally, or at least heard about him from others. He purchased his 1949 MG TC brand new from the showroom floor and it still sits in his garage, complete with its original albeit weathered Clipper Blue paint. Joe came to our group in 1959 and was a tremendous personality within TC Motoring Guild, having served as President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer and Director, plus Membership and Events Chairs. He led countless tours, most famously our annual wildflower tour in Antelope Valley. He loved TCs and freely shared his wisdom on their mechanical peculiarities with anyone who would listen.

Joe loved his vintage motorcycles as well, and in addition to the TC he also drove an MGB GT and a VW bug. His charm and wit were things of legend, and his kindness was infectious. He loved the outdoors, which is something that seems to go hand in hand with the MG TC. The world needs more Joe Douglass’, and we will miss him dearly.

David McCanne Passes

We have just learned that TCMG member David McCanne passed on September 30.  A private service was held in October.  He and Lucy joined the group in 1993 and were active members until recently, still driving the TC that David bought in 1959.

The McCannes and their TC were regularly seen at TCMG activities including meetings, driving events and our annual Conclave with the Abingdon Rough Riders, as well as various GoF West events.  He also had a love of trains, which he shared with us in the form of his amazing models at a meeting years ago.  Our thoughts are with Lucy and the rest of their family.

Dues Are Due

Remember to send in your 2023 membership dues! If you’re attending the holiday party, you can send your dues and meal payments together.  Meal payments must be made by November 20, and dues are due by the holiday party on December 4th.  If you need instructions, see the Membership Renewal page.

meetings

The 2022 TCMG Holiday Party will take place on Sunday, December 4. This year’s party will be a BBQ-style luncheon held at the home of Steve & Linda Simmons. Join us and enjoy the following entertainment and activities:

  • Awards ceremonies for our three prestigious trophies:
    • Earl Sargent Memorial “Use it or lose it” Trophy
    • Frank Mason Award
    • Breakdown Award
  • Announcement of the 2023 TC Motoring Guild Executive Council.
  • Our annual tradition, auctioning of “The Brick”. This is a piece of the original Abingdon factory where our TCs were built. The wining bid takes the brick home for one year.
  • Raffle where you can win fabulous prizes! Advance tickets sales available for Zoom attendees. In-person attendees may purchase in advance or at the party.  Those who drive a TC to the meeting will get one free raffle ticket with their ticket purchase.
  • Touring the Simmons’ collection of vintage cars.
  • 50/50 drawing where you can win a pile of money! Bring cash to purchase 50/50 tickets.
  • Special screening of a fully restored, high definition film showing the very first TCMG / ARR Conclave from 1957.
  • Fundraiser and Toy Drive to benefit Foster Children’s Resource Center.  The center provides emergency clothing and necessities to foster children referred by the Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS). It gives each child new school clothing, a jacket, pajamas, socks, underwear, personal care items, a backpack, school supplies, a book, and a toy. Each child is given personal attention and treated with dignity and respect, helping them to feel special.  Bring a new, unwrapped toy or contact Joyce Edgar to make a cash donation. Toys needed most this year are for ages 4-8.

Parts of this meeting will be simulcast on Zoom.

November recap: 15 members and one guest attended our November meeting on Zoom. 6 TCs made a simulated journey to the meeting by driving 10 miles or more.  TCs were driven by Edgar, Hunsberger, Lemieux, S Simmons, M Simmons and Taylor.  Thanks to Curt Sorensen for his presentation on LED D-Lamp conversions.
