TC Motoring Guild 1955 / 2025 Photo

TC Motoring Guild has just accomplished a painstakingly planned photo recreation of its first event 70 years ago! Two years in the planning, the group successfully located the original photo spot and returned the cars to Apple Valley Ridge in the Mojave Desert for a then & now photo. A video showing the journey from discovering the photo to recreating it has just been posted on YouTube!

Two of TC Motoring Guild’s Earliest Members Pass

Jim Crandall

Jim Crandall

Jim was one of our longest term members. He joined in 1961 and along with his wife Norma was a vital part of our club since day one. Looking through our old photos and newsletters, he and his wife Norma were always there, along with their TC which remains in the family today. He and Norma were a driving force in many of the Guild’s activities, with Jim serving in various roles including President, Vice President, Treasurer, Director, Events Coordinator, Newsletter Editor and Webmaster. We will miss him dearly.

Mike Goodman

Mike & Sharon Goodman

Mike was a legend in the M.G. community and probably kept more TCs on the road than anyone over the years. He joined TCMG in 1964 and over the decades never hesitated to offer assistance or advice to those in need. He served many roles in the club including Vice President, Treasurer, Programs Chair, Events Chair and Director, in addition to his unofficial role as “M.G. Guru and Free Advice Giver”. Mike and Sharon opened their home more than once for our holiday parties. The club will not be the same without Mike.

meetings

Our next monthly meeting will be held on October 25 (Saturday) at the Spiegel Residence in San Marino. Further details will be announced soon.

Drive your TC at least 10 miles during your photo tour and receive a point toward the Sargent Award!

Click the YouTube link to view in high quality.

Stan Lucas Passes

We’re sad to report the passing of long time TCMG member Stan Lucas. Stan was the owner of Lucas Classic Tire and was a real force in the car collecting world. His collection was always kept very private but remains one of the premier collections on the west coast, especially his numerous rare early brass cars. There among Stutz, Noble, Packard, Bugatti and many others was his MG TC, displayed as proudly as the others. We would love to share photos of his collection but he never allowed them to be taken. Stan didn’t even use a computer, instead sending hand-written letters in reply after his employees read an email to him. If the reply was time sensitive, he would write the letter and his guys would scan and email it for him. He was a real gentleman and a true enthusiast. Stan was a TCMG member for 36 years.

Our next monthly meeting will be held on April 22, on Zoom. The evening’s program will be “Your TC’s Early History”. Members are encouraged to share the history of their cars before they owned them. Please limit your talk to around 5 minutes so everyone who wants to participate gets the chance.

Those who drive their TC 10 miles or more on the day of the meeting will receive a point toward the Sargent Award.

March recap: 14 members and 1 guest plus 5 TCs attended our March meeting. TCs were driven by Loe, Olson, S&L Simmons, Spiegel, and Zucca. Thanks to Gene Olson and Patty Salehpour for their hospitality in hosting this meeting!

For more meeting and event information, visit the Calendar Page.

Monthly Events

The scheduled Wildflower Tour has been cancelled due to a lack of blooms. In its place we will picnic at the Queen’s English British Car Show. Bring a picnic lunch and enjoy one of the better British car shows in the area. It is a non-judged show, and includes an auto jumble nearby. The show is held at Woodley Park in Van Nuys, and runs from 8:30 AM to 3:30 PM. Club members are encouraged to gather in the MG T-Series section at 11AM for a picnic among the TCs. Bring your own, or buy food from the food truck vendors on site. (We can’t guarantee they will be there but they usually are!) See www.queens-english.org for more information.

March recap: Seven TCs and 14 members took part in our “Apple Valley 70 Years Later” event and posed in a photo recreation. Our thanks to those who helped make this happen, namely Steve Simmons of TCMG, Marcy Taylor of Mohahve Historical Society, Mayor Scott Nassif of Apple Valley and Councilman Art Bishop. Additional thanks to Rob Zucca, Linda Simmons, David Edgar and all those who attended or assisted with the event.

Monthly DIY Tours

The Spring DIY Tour is on! Since our annual Wildflower Tour was canceled, the theme for this tour is “Flowers”. Your task is to photograph your TC with something to do with flowers. It doesn’t have to be actual flowers, so get creative and have fun!

Submit your photo(s) to Mike Simmons by May 18th to be included in the May meeting slide show. Email address is in the club directory. Be sure to drive your TC at least 10 miles during your photo tour to receive a point toward the Sargent Award.

For more meeting and event information, visit the Calendar Page.

Bonus Points

Want to earn more “Use it or lose it” points and have fun with your TC while doing it? Here are six challenges that will earn you points from now until October 15th. That’s one task per month, but you can do them at any time, in any order.

– Enter your TC in a car show
– Attend a Cars & Coffee type event
– Participate in a parade
– Let a child who is not yours sit in a TC for the first time
– Find a British flag while out driving
– Get a photo of your TC on a road showing three or more curves in the picture

Each challenge completed with a TC will earn one point. Submit photos as you get them to Steve Simmons for inclusion in our meeting slide shows. Photos must be taken and submitted between April 12 and October 15.

Monthly Events

The first TCMG organized driving event was held in March of 1955. On the weekend of March 29-30 we will re-create that event, with a planned visit to the very spot where the sole surviving photograph of that event was taken. Be a part of something most clubs will never get to experience on this very special tour!

The image to the left is from our first event in 1955. We have obtained special permission to put our TCs back on this ridge in the very same spot were visited 70 years ago, and take a new photo! Other activities are also planned for the weekend. Hotel information will be sent out by email to those who have signed up.

Please note that this is an RSVP event, as there are channels we need to go through to get the cars onto the ridge. Contact Steve Simmons if you plan to attend.

February recap: Three TCs (one a TB) plus some modern iron took part in our Lame Duck Kup event. Congratulations to Linda Simmons for sweeping the competition and taking home the trophy!

To learn more about these awards, including the various ways the breakdown award has been won, see the History Section of the web site.

The Edgars Set A New Record

David and Joyce Edgar have won the Earl Sargent Memorial “Use it or Lose it” Trophy this year for a record-setting seventh time! The trophy was first awarded in 1991, and the Edgars achieved their first victory in 2003. Congratulations!

TC Motoring Guild Turns 70 Years Old

Although the group was loosely assembled back in 1952, TCMG was officially formed on June 19, 1954 in the offices of Road & Track magazine. Last June we celebrated 70 years of honoring the MG TC! Our annual Summer Picnic Meeting doubled as a birthday party commemorating our seventh decade as a one make, one model club. A large number of historical artifacts from our archives were on display in a special exhibit put together by Steve Simmons and Rob Zucca. See the August newsletter for photos of this meeting.

TC Provenance List Being Updated and Modernized by TCMG

The well known TC Provenance List was created by TC owner Bob Stein well over a decade ago.  Steve Simmons has assisted with data submissions and updates for the past few years but the list has grown too large to manage by hand.  TC Motoring Guild has jumped in to help update, modernize and maintain the list.  Two of our members, Mike Simmons and Steve Simmons are currently working to convert years of hand typed notes into a sorted and organized database of TC car numbers, owner names, locations and historical data.  The project will take a tremendous amount of man hours but the end result will be a fully modern and searchable database, hosted on the TCMG website.  You can see the old hand-typed Provenance List HERE until the new version is completed.

meetings

Our next monthly meeting will be held on February 25th on Zoom. Steve Simmons will give a slide presentation on some of the unusual places their TC has gone, culminating with a particular trip into the Sierra Nevada Mountains of California. No paved roads will be a part of this story! Learn how to risk getting stranded in the wilderness, and how to set off on a trip completely unprepared and in a vehicle unsuited for the terrain. This and other important life lessons will be discussed.

January recap: 27 members attended our January meeting. 3 TCs were driven a simulated journey to the meeting by Edgar, Lemieux and Zucca. Thanks to Dan Shockey for his presentation on MG and the RAF!

December recap: 51 members attended our Annual Meeting and Holiday Party at the Simmons residence. Six TCs were present, driven by Edgar, Lemieux, Loe, S. Simmons, St. Clair and Zucca. The club filled an entire Morris with toys for donation to Foster Children’s Resource Cents, plus a substantial cash donation. Further thanks to Mike and Sharon Goodman for a generous donation to our club fundraiser of tools and literature from Mike’s legendary restoration shop. You can see the old hand-typed Provenance List HERE until the new version is completed.

meetings

Our first meeting of 2025 will be held on Zoom. The evening’s program will feature a presentation by Dan Shockey on M.G. and the RAF, focusing on their close and unique bond. Find out what is fact and what is legend in this very interesting presentation!

Note that anyone making a simulated journey to the meeting in a TC by driving a minimum of 10 miles on the day of the meeting will receive a point toward the Sargent Award.

Thank you to all who helped make this event happen, and to all those who attended!

Monthly DIY Tours

Slip on a warm coat and head out for the TCMG Winter DIY Tour! To participate, your task is to photograph your TC (with or without you in it) with something that suggests “snow”. It doesn’t have to be actual snow, so for those living in the warmer climates you can use your creativity. Something that looks cold or Wintery might do, or perhaps the clever use of a sign or other object that suggests snow or Winter. Think outside the (ice)box!

Drive 10 or more miles during your photo tour to receive a point toward the 2025 Sargent Award. For those with actual snow on the roads, you only need to drive far enough for someone to do a double take at the lunatic driving a TC in the snow to receive points.

Submit your photo(s) to Joyce Edgar by January 15 to receive points and be included in our January meeting slide show.

For more meeting and event information, visit the Calendar Page.

This June we celebrated 70 years of honoring the MG TC!

Our next monthly meeting will be held September 24 on Zoom. The evening’s program will feature “Vanity” license plates seen or owned by our members. Keep an eye out and get photos if you can, to share during the meeting. The more clever, the better. M.G. content is even better!

Note that anyone making a simulated journey to the meeting in a TC by driving a minimum of 10 miles on the day of the meeting will receive a point toward the Sargent Award.

August recap: 24 members and 3 guests (two who joined immediately after) attended our August online meeting. 4 TCs were driven a simulated 10 miles by Edgar, Lane, Lemieux and S. Simmons. Special thanks to Dan Shockey for his presentation on The Royal MGs.

Monthly Events

Spend a day surrounded by classic lines and good friends at one of the best British car shows in Southern California.  Bring your TC if you can, and don’t forget a picnic lunch and a blanket or chairs!  Run by the Central Coast British Car Club, the show is set in the cool ocean breeze at Channel Islands Park in Oxnard.  What better way is there to spend a Summer day?

Trophies are awarded for all classes of cars. Food for purchase will be available on-site as well.

Meet at the TCMG banner for our picnic at 12:00 PM.  If you plan to enter your TC, let Steve Simmons know and we will save you a spot by our banner.  The show runs from 9AM – 2:30PM.  Click here for show details and entry form.

May recap: 12 members with 5 TCs participated in our May event. Those with TCs were Bickley, Lemieux, S Simmons, Thelander and Zucca.

As always we are seeking photos for the Members Gallery showing you and your TC. We also welcome member biographies so your fellow TCMG’ers can learn a bit about you, your history with your TC or anything else you care to write about. Historic photos and stories are also being sought to expand our TCMG History section on the site. Please send what you have to Steve Simmons.
