TC Provenance List Being Updated and Modernized by TCMG

The well known TC Provenance List was created by TC owner Bob Stein well over a decade ago.  Steve Simmons has assisted with data submissions and updates for the past few years but the list has grown too large to manage by hand.  TC Motoring Guild has jumped in to help update, modernize and maintain the list.  Two of our members, Mike Simmons and Steve Simmons are currently working to convert years of hand typed notes into a sorted and organized database of TC car numbers, owner names, locations and historical data.  The project will take a tremendous amount of man hours but the end result will be a fully modern and searchable database, hosted on the TCMG website.  You can see the old hand-typed Provenance List HERE until the new version is completed.

meetings

Our next monthly meeting will be held on Zoom on April 23rd. The evening’s program will be announced shortly.

Note that anyone making a simulated journey to the meeting in a TC by driving a minimum of 10 miles on the day of the meeting will receive a point toward the Sargent Award.

March recap: 31 members attended our March meeting on Zoom.  Four TCs were driven a simulated 10 miles by Edgar, Lemieux, S. Simmons and St. Clair. Thanks to Pete Thelander for his presentation on TF restoration and modification.

meetings

Our next monthly meeting will be held on Zoom on February 27th. The evening’s program will involve our members sharing their three favorite MG related items. Choose up to three things that aren’t bolted to your car. It could be the first MG key chain you ever got, a perfect condition period shop manual, a first edition “The Red Car”, the cross flow head you bought, installed, then realized it was porous and removed it, the T shirt from your first GOF, a copy of the speeding ticket you got in your TC (an exceedingly rare item), MG models, literature, etc. Items don’t have to be MG-centric, but should be related, like Lucas, SU, etc.

If you have photos to show and aren’t familiar with screen sharing on Zoom, send your photos to Joyce Edgar by February 26th and she will display them for you at the meeting.

Note that anyone making a simulated journey to the meeting in a TC by driving a minimum of 10 miles on the day of the meeting will receive a point toward the Sargent Award.

Drive at least 5 miles during your tour to receive one point toward this year’s (2024) Sargent Award. Photo submissions are due by January 15th and should be sent to Joyce Edgar for inclusion in our January Meeting on the 23rd.

Have another TCMG member in your area? Team up and get a group photo! Most importantly as always is, have fun!

You can see the old hand-typed Provenance List HERE until the new version is completed.

meetings

Our next monthly meeting will be held on Zoom on January 23rd. Details of the evening’s program will be announced shortly.

December recap: 40 members and one guest attended our Annual Meeting & Holiday Party in December at the Simmons residence. Seven TCs plus several other classics were in attendance. TCs were driven by Edgar, Lemieux, Loe, Mathison, M. Simmons, S. Simmons and Zucca.

The Annual Meeting & Holiday Party is coming

Our Annual Meeting & Holiday Party is scheduled for Sunday, December 3rd. See the Calendar Page for details.

TCMG Wins the Monterey Cup at GoF West Again!

For the second year in a row, TCMG brought home the Monterey Cup from GoF West. The cup is awarded to the single club with the most members in attendance that year. Congratulations to all who attended the event! Also notable is the daughter and son-in-law of David & Joyce Edgar, who in the Edgar’s TC won the Al Moss Memorial High Point Trophy, the premiere award for the event!

Tight Competition for the Sargent Trophy!

The year is nearly over, and the battle for the Sargent Trophy has been fierce!  The top three competitors are separated by less than 2 points, and all three have had a perfect attendance thus far. Could this be the first time we’ve awarded three Iron Bottoms in a single year? Be at the Holiday Party on December 3rd to find out!

meetings

The 2023 TCMG Holiday Party will take place on Sunday, December 3. This year’s party will be a BBQ-style luncheon held at the home of Steve & Linda Simmons. Join us and enjoy the following entertainment and activities:

  • Awards ceremonies for our three prestigious trophies:
    • Earl Sargent Memorial “Use it or lose it” Trophy
    • Frank Mason Award
    • Breakdown Award
    • Iron Bottom Awards
  • Announcement of the 2024 TC Motoring Guild Executive Council.
  • Live auction of select items including our annual tradition, auctioning of “The Brick”. This is a piece of the original Abingdon factory where our TCs were built. The wining bid takes the brick home for one year.
  • Raffles where you can win fabulous prizes! Advance tickets sales available for those not attending in person. Those who drive a TC to the meeting and purchase raffle tickets will get one free additional raffle ticket with their purchase, as well as a point toward the Sargent Award simply for attending in a TC.
  • Touring the Simmons’ collection of vintage cars.
  • Slide show of 2023 TCMG tours plus a special screening of a video by TCMG member Daniel Harrison featuring our Lame Duk event.
  • Souvenir photos printed on the spot for all attendees.
  • Toy Drive and Fundraiser to benefit Foster Children’s Resource Center. Bring a new, unwrapped toy or contact Joyce Edgar to make a cash donation.

November recap: 17 members and guests attended our November meeting. Thanks to Dean Caccavo for a fascinating and in-depth presentation on the collection and restoration of his unusual British cars!

Conclave is Coming!

The 67th Annual TCMG / ARR Conclave will be held October 1-3 in Paso Robles. Look for information on the Calendar Page as well as in upcoming newsletters and group email.

Tight Competition for the Sargent Trophy!

The year is more than halfway over, and the battle for the Sargent Trophy has been fierce!  The top three competitors are separated by only 2 points, and all three have had a perfect attendance thus far. Could this be the first time we’ve awarded three Iron Bottoms in a single year?

History Project Underway

Boxes of historical documents and artifacts dating back to the 1950’s and not seen in many years have recently been unearthed from the archives. A project to sort and preserves these items is currently underway by club historian Steve Simmons with assistance by Rob Zucca. Look to future newsletters for interesting discoveries as the project develops.

Monthly DIY Tours

To celebrate this Labor Day weekend, you task is to find something holiday-related.  Perhaps just something that says “labor”.  Don’t worry, we aren’t making it that difficult.  We at TCMG are an equal opportunity holiday celebrators, so you are allowed to choose ANY holiday in September.  But how many can there possibly be?  You may be surprised…

https://nationaltoday.com/september-holidays/

You can pick any holiday (they seem to use that term loosely) from the above link and base your photo(s) upon it.  Send your photo(s) along with a description and what holiday you chose to Joyce Edgar by September 21 for inclusion in our next Zoom meeting.

Drive at least 5 miles during your photo shoot and receive a point toward the Sargent Award.  Competition for this year’s award is tight, with three members also going for the Iron Bottom Award.  See: http://www.tcmotoringguild.org/history/sargentaward/

The July DIY Tour is on!  Summer has taken hold in much of the country, and they say July 4th was the hottest average global temperature ever recorded. Drive your TC at least 5 miles during your photo shoot and receive a point toward the Sargent Award.

Send your photo(s) to Joyce Edgar by July 22nd to receive credit and be included in the slide show at our next Zoom meeting.

TC Motoring Guild loses two members

Ed Pohle: Allan Chalmers has just informed us that Ed Pohle recently passed. He and Karen (who passed in 2019) were members for over 22 years and members of ARR for much longer. They lived in Squaw Valley for a number of years and then moved to Auburn just a few years ago. His TC was one of the best – he won first in class twice at Pebble Beach in 1966 and 1967. Ed and Karen will both be missed.

Mark Acosta: The Acostas are recent members but have made a big impression on our group. Mark’s outgoing and friendly attitude along with his enthusiasm for old cars made him a perfect fit within our band of TC lovers. His passing was sudden and too soon, but we are grateful to have known him for the time he was with us. Our thoughts and prayers are with Deb and the rest of Mark’s family. Services will be held on March 25th in Fresno, CA.

TC Motoring Guild loses its earliest member, Joe Douglass

It’s with a heavy heart that we bring you the news of Joe Douglass’ passing at the age of 103. Most of us knew Joe personally, or at least heard about him from others. He purchased his 1949 MG TC brand new from the showroom floor and it still sits in his garage, complete with its original albeit weathered Clipper Blue paint. Joe came to our group in 1959 and was a tremendous personality within TC Motoring Guild, having served as President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer and Director, plus Membership and Events Chairs. He led countless tours, most famously our annual wildflower tour in Antelope Valley. He loved TCs and freely shared his wisdom on their mechanical peculiarities with anyone who would listen.

Joe loved his vintage motorcycles as well, and in addition to the TC he also drove an MGB GT and a VW bug. His charm and wit were things of legend, and his kindness was infectious. He loved the outdoors, which is something that seems to go hand in hand with the MG TC. The world needs more Joe Douglass’, and we will miss him dearly.

meetings

Our next monthly meeting will be held on April 25 on Zoom.  The evening’s program will be a collection of photos and stories from our members called “Things I wish the previous owner hadn’t done”.  If you have a stories to share, send them to Mike Simmons.

Note that anyone making a simulated journey to the meeting in a TC by driving a minimum of 10 miles on the day of the meeting will receive a point toward the Sargent Award.

March recap: 23 members attended our February meeting on Zoom. Four TCs were driven a simulated journey of at least ten miles by Edgar, Lemieux, Loe and Steve Simmons. Thanks to Charley Williams for his presentation on his documentary about the Shasta Ski area.  You can now view the video here.
