TC Motoring Guild Rides Again!

TCMG motored back into action on February 12 with our first driving event of the new year, the 2022 Lame Duk Kup Rallye.  Drivers were challenged to find clues along scenic mountain roads and tried to outsmart the rallye master with their answers.  The team of Daniel Harrison and Myah Lunceford won top honors, taking home the Duck for the year. See the upcoming March newsletter for more info on this and other events.

New Monthly Bonus Events Announced

In addition to our regular driving events, each month this year will have a bonus “do it yourself” tour. These tours will be in the spirit of our main events, keeping with the theme of each month’s activity. Bonus tours will be announced in the first half of each month, so be sure to keep an eye on the club calendar for updates!

Each bonus tour will also count for one point toward the Sargent Award, but will not be required activities to win an Iron Bottom Award. We hope you participate!

meetings

Click to enlargeOur next monthly meeting will be held March 22 on Zoom.  Our program for the evening will be a competition to test your TC mechanical knowledge, hosted by Joyce Edgar.  Join us and compete to gain international fame and win fabulous prizes!

The meeting starts at 6:00 PM (Pacific).  Members may join 15 minutes early.

Note that anyone making a simulated journey to the meeting in a TC by driving a minimum of 10 miles on the day of the meeting will receive a point toward the Sargent Award.

February recap: 27 members attended our February meeting, held online. Seven TCs were driven at least 10 miles by Thelander, Edgar, S. Simmons, Loe, Hunsberger, Lemieux and M. Simmons (trailered it around town!). Special thanks to John Bowyer for a great presentation on the “TC Wing” of his collection.

One of our long time members Leo Pedersen has passed away, leaving a big hole in our group of intrepid TC enthusiasts.  Leo along with his wife Martha was a regular at our northern events including annual Conclaves and was loved by all who were fortunate enough to know him.  His humor and wit, not to mention willingness to share his vast knowledge and experience about MGs will be sorely missed.

Remembering Leo Pedersen

One of our long time members Leo Pedersen has passed away, leaving a big hole in our group of intrepid TC enthusiasts.  Leo along with his wife Martha was a regular at our northern events including annual Conclaves and was loved by all who were fortunate enough to know him.  His humor and wit, not to mention willingness to share his vast knowledge and experience about MGs will be sorely missed.

Read more about Leo’s life and M.G. travels in the December 2021 newsletter.

2021 Holiday Party Announced

Our first in-person meeting since the pandemic started will be a return of our annual holiday party to be held on Sunday, December 5 in Granada Hills.  See the current newsletter for details on location, time and meal selection.

meetings

Our next general meeting will be held on Tuesday, November 16 (Note date change due to Thanksgiving). Kregg Hunsberger has a very unique TC, which was handed down to him from his father, an early hot rodder. Major changes to the TC include a flathead V8-60 installed in 1950 along with many other modifications done in that time period. Kregg will details these changes and give us a glimpse into a time capsule from an era when cars like TCs were viewed differently than they are today.

The meeting starts at 6:00 PM (Pacific).  Members may join 15 minutes early.

Note that anyone making a simulated journey to the meeting in a TC by driving a minimum of 10 miles on the day of the meeting will receive a point toward the Sargent Award.

October recap: 26 members and guests attended our October online meeting.  Three TCs were driven a simulated 10-mile journey to the meeting, driven by Loe, Lemieux and Hunsberger.  Very special thanks to Mike Simmons for an amazing presentation on eclipse chasing and other astronomical travels!

meetings

Our next monthly meeting will be held via Zoom on October 26.  TCMG member Mike Simmons has offered to give us an astronomy based travelogue program. He has had the opportunity of traveling to different countries and seeing how a common interest in astronomy brings people together. We all observe the same sky and are on the same planet. Mike has been an amateur astronomer and eclipse chaser for more than 40 years. He has worked at observatories and created worldwide programs to elucidate the wonders of the Universe. His passion for total solar eclipses has taken him to the Middle East, a mountain in the Andes, and other interesting locations. He has led eclipse tours, and he started his own astronomy-related tour company in early 2020 just in time to be temporarily put out of business by the pandemic. Mike will explain the extraordinary experience of a total solar eclipse, how it’s so much more than a few minutes of darkness, why you should travel into the Moon’s shadow yourself, and why there are people who spend their lives following that shadow.

The meeting starts at 6:00 PM (Pacific).  Members may join 15 minutes early.

Note that anyone making a simulated journey to the meeting in a TC by driving a minimum of 10 miles on the day of the meeting will receive a point toward the Sargent Award.

September recap: 23 members participated in our August meeting.  4 TCs were driven a simulated 10-mile journey by Loe, Lemieux, Hunsberger and Thelander.  Thanks to Allan Chalmers for a glimpse into the restoration of his MG TA!

For more meeting and event information, visit the Calendar Page.

The last driving event for the year will be held Saturday, November 6. Depart Magpie’s Grill in La Canada at 10:00 AM for a tour through the Flintridge and San Rafael Hills, then stop at a park for a picnic lunch. If you plan on having breakfast at Magpie’s, arrive early enough to be ready to start the drive at 10:00. Please bring your picnic lunch and a chair. TCMG Expands In-Person Activities

Since returning to in-person driving events in March, we have adapted to offer fun and safe activities for our members.  Scenic drives and picnics have become a common activity, which is reminiscent of the early days of the club.  Our faces may have aged a little over the years but the cars still look as young as ever!

On June 22, the first in-person meeting since the pandemic started was held at the Henkels home.  2020 was the first time this annual picnic was canceled since the first one over 25 years ago, but fortunately we were able to hold it again this year.  Further adapting to current events, we experimented with a live web broadcast of the meeting which went well.  Members who we not able, or not comfortable attending in person were able to talk to those at the picnic and see the TCs on display.

We have been granted a discount of $5.00 per ticket if ordered online. The TCMG Executive Board has also agreed to comp an additional $10.00 per member reducing the entrance fee to $11.95 for seniors and $14.95 for general admission (check website for additional categories).

Please email Richard Loe to RSVP and receive the promo code for the discount. To avoid finding tickets sold out, plan on ordering by September 1st.  See the upcoming newsletter or contact Richard for details on meeting location and time.

August Recap: 31 members and guests took part in our August event.  Five TCs were present, driven by Loe, Simmons, Zucca, Ockwell and Einhorn.  Many thanks to the Einhorns for hosting another memorable hot dog party at their amazing home!

Members who we not able, or not comfortable attending in person were able to talk to those at the picnic and see the TCs on display.

meetings

Our next monthly meeting will be held via Zoom on August 24.  Our program for the evening is “Abingdon’s Last Days”.  TCMG member John Bowyer of Spring, TX. made a couple of trips to the Abingdon MG factory and has a large number of photos that were once the factory’s property, as well as memorabilia relating to the factory’s final years. Don’t miss this fascinating presentation, as you won’t see many of these items anywhere else!

The meeting starts at 6:00 PM (Pacific).  Members may join 15 minutes early.

Note that anyone making a simulated journey to the meeting in a TC by driving a minimum of 10 miles on the day of the meeting will receive a point toward the Sargent Award.

July recap: 21 members participated in our July meeting.  5 TCs were driven a simulated 10-mile journey by Loe, Lemieux, Simmons, Hunsberger and Zucca.

For more meeting and event information, visit the Calendar Page.

events

It’s back! On August 14! Once again a TC outing you will relish. The almost annual Einhorn Frankfurter Festival. Big Vienna natural casing (to get the snap) hot dogs made in Chicago by Chicagoans and flown 1,700 miles west to get into the hands and mouths of people who own little cars. Topped with mustard, Kelly green relish, onions and celery salt. Please do not ask for Ketchup.

This is a definite RSVP event because of seating and dogs. You won’t want to be standing and be holding an empty bun. All RSVPs must be given by August 6. RSVP to Larry Einhorn (see directory for email address).

A driving tour will precede the main event. Details on the tour are forthcoming.  Contact Richard Loe for more information.

July Recap: 14 members took part in our July event at GoF West.  Several TCs made the journey to Mount Hood, Oregon.  Those who drove the journey were Loe, Thelander and Lemieux (broke down en route) with others arriving on trailers.

For more meeting and event information, visit the Calendar Page.

TC Motoring Guild Rides Again!

On Saturday, March 20, TC Motoring Guild held its first group event since the pandemic halted in-person activities one year prior.  15 members and guests with six TCs participated in the event, which was originally scheduled to visit the California Poppy Reserves.  Due to high winds, bitter cold and no poppies, a change was made the day before the event and the group instead headed west from our meeting point in Castaic.  Driving along scenic roads, our new destination was Heritage Valley where we viewed captive flowers instead of wild ones at a nursery with an astounding array of rose varieties.  A socially distanced picnic lunch topped off the day at a nearby park, in perfect weather.

Continuing with our Covid-safe activities, April saw an even larger turnout with 28 members and eight TCs taking a historic home tour through the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains, followed by a “picnic beneath the oaks” at Gene Olson’s residence.  May’s event took the group into the San Gabriel Mountains for a picnic lunch and driving tour.  It’s good to be back in the saddle!

meetings

Our return to in-person meetings will begin with the much anticipated Summer Picnic Meeting at the Henkels home in Pasadena on June 22! Bring a picnic dinner and dine under the stars at this annual favorite. Dessert will be provided by our hostess. Those driving TCs or equally interesting classics (tall order) get preferred parking in the driveway. Meeting starts at 7:00 PM. Local members will receive an invitation in the mail. As a courtesy to our hostess Cindy Henkels, please be sure to RSVP.

LIVE WEB BROADCAST: This in-person activity will be broadcast on Zoom.  Members who are not able to attend in person can log on starting at 6:45 PM for social chat with live attendees and to view the meeting portion of the picnic as it happens. To join the meeting via Zoom, click this link on June 22 any time after 6:45 PM: https://zoom.us/j/6234447498

It’s good to be back in the saddle!

meetings

Our general meeting on May 25 meeting will be held online using the Zoom application.  The meeting will begin at 6:00 PM Pacific Time. (You can log on starting at 5:45 PM).  You can participate using any computer or device with the free Zoom software installed.  If you require assistance installing Zoom, contact David Edgar.

Our program for the evening will be a slide show by members Joyce and David Edgar with accompanying information on GoF West, an annual all-M.G. event the club has participated in several times.  The talk will include the history of GoF and what kind of activities are held during the 5-day event.  GoF West has been made a TCMG event this year so if you plan to participate then you will want to attend this meeting.  Shown also will be some bonus photos from 2020 events that have not been seen before.

Note that anyone making a simulated journey to the meeting in a TC by driving a minimum of 10 miles on the day of the meeting will receive a point toward the Sargent Award.

April recap: 28 Members attended our April meeting.  3 TCs were driven a simulated trip to the meeting of 10 miles or more.  Those who drove were Lemieux, Loe and Simmons.

For more meeting and event information, visit the Calendar Page.

events

Our next driving event will beheld on May 15.  It will be a scenic drive along Angeles Crest and Angeles Forest Highways, with a picnic lunch at Monte Cristo Campground.

We will gather at the parking area adjacent to the La Canada Flintridge City Hall/Olberz Park (intersection of Civic Center Drive & Town Center Drive) at 9:45 AM. After a little tire kicking we will drive Angeles Crest Highway to Angeles Forest Highway and stop for a picnic at the Monte Cristo Campground. Please bring your picnic, a folding chair, and face mask. Driving your MG or a modern, everyone is welcome.  Contact Richard Loe for further details.

April Recap: 21 members took part in our April driving tour and picnic. 8 TCs participated, driven by Appell, Lemieux, Loe, Ockwell, Olson, Simmons, Spiegel and Thelander.  Other classics were driven by Zucca (MGA) and Shapiro (Rolls). Special thanks to Gene Olson and Patty Salehpour for hosting a “picnic under the oaks” at their lovely home.

TCMG Mourns The Loss Of Toni Appell

Mel & Toni AppellWith a deep sense of loss, we are saddened to report the passing of Toni Appell, a long time member and caring friend to all who were fortunate enough to meet her.  Mel and Toni spent many years touring in their TC and frequenting club meetings, always with a smile and a good story to tell.  They joined TCMG in 1990 and soon became stalwarts of the club.  Her positive and caring personality was infectious, and she will be dearly missed.

Services will be held on Sunday, February 7.  Due to Covid restrictions, the service will be broadcast on Zoom for general attendance.  See the group email list for details.
